Kiran Sadhwani, first engineer girl from Thar appointed as an engineer at the Thar Coal Project.

Kiran is 23 years old and completed her BS from Mehran University of Engineering Technology. When she came to know about the job openings in Thar Coal Project, she applied for the job and got selected. Although Kiran had the option to work in big cities like Karachi but she preferred to work at her region to serve her community.

Kiran told Express Tribune that about eight months ago she was selected out of 4000 students. She revealed that the process of recruitment was too mind-numbing and she was hopeless and was expecting that she would fail but later on she was selected for the project.

She said: “I proved that a Thari girl is equally competent, despite all the issues she faces in the region.”

“When I came for the final interview my father insisted I would have to commute every day as he wouldn’t allow me to live near the site where many other officers and workers live,” she added.

While explaining about the circumstances she faced Kiran Sadhwani said: “I wanted to reside at the site so I could visit the mining site easily and learn in the field. I didn’t want to live in my comfort zone by just confining myself to office work so I persuaded my father to allow me to stay there.”

Kiran told that after meeting the officials at the site, her father permitted her to stay there. She visits her home town Mithi after every two weeks.

“Just like most parents, my parents also wanted me to study medical as engineering was too difficult a profession for a girl. It was the first challenge I faced but after continued efforts I succeeded in persuading them. I told them it’s not just medical or teaching professions where women can work and excel. It is actually their passion that leads to success.”

Kiran is very first girl from her community i.e. Lohana to work as an engineer. She got her primary & intermediate education from Mithi and later on moved to Mehran University of Engineering Technology for her further studies.
