Punjab Government makes blood test compulsory before marriage
The government of Punjab has made amendments in the marriage registration form and made blood test compulsory for both bride and groom before marriage. The step was taken to prevent the transmission of contagious diseases like HIV and hepatitis among the couple and their children.
In this regard, The Punjab Thalassemia Prevention & Treatment Programme( PTPP) in cooperation with lawmakers has prepared a bill for pre-marriage blood tests. Government of Punjab has circulated a notification to district coordination officers and commissioners for the implementation of bill.
It was stated in the notification that government has made pre-marriage blood tests for both bride and groom obligatory. Further notification stated that bride and groom has to provide the CNIC cards of their parents & that of witnesses of marriage along with the report of their blood test declaring them free of any disease. Punjab government has also made obligatory the signature of parents of bride and groom on the registration form.
Moreover, couple has to attach their passport size photographs along with their birth dates. Keeping in view the bill, some new sections had been added to the registration form.
