AIOU Introduces free educational program for transgender community
Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has introduced free educational programme for transgender community of the country. Transgender community is one of the most neglected communities of our society.
The purpose of this initiative is to impart quality education to the community and to aid them in improving their living conditions. AIOU is already running various programs to ease the third gender of Pakistan in improving their life style.
Vice Chancellor (VC) of AIOU, Professor Dr. Shahid Siddiqui said: “we have multiple successful programs running for marginalized and stigmatized segments of the society. Now we have decided to launch a program for the amelioration of transgender people of Pakistan. Through this program, we hope to return their long-lost self-respect and dignity to them and make them responsible citizens of the society.”
Moreover, AIOU is also facilitating handicapped & visually impaired students by providing them free education. AIOU is also offering free of cost education to the jail inmates. Currently, a large number of prisoners from various jails of the country are enrolled in the university.
VC revealed that computerized accessibility centres are also setup in 44 regional offices of university. Siddiqui added: “I recently visited the Thatta centre where the spirit of the girls was worth watching. 400 girls have cleared the examination for class 8 out of which 377 have now taken admission in Matric,”
