NUST produce cardiac stents: First institution in Pakistan
NUST school of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering became the first institution in country to produce cardiac/coronary stents. Dr Murtaza Najabat Ali guided The Medical Devices Development Centre (MDDC) at NUST.
Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) has funded the centre for the production of coronary stents. In addition, NUST also produced angioplasty balloon catheters. Now institute is capable enough to produce both bare metal and drug-eluted cardiac stents.
Now NUST will provide cardiac stents to selected hospitals of Pakistan by the end of 2017. MDDC is also taking measures to setup facility at NUST for the production of other health related organs.
Till now 450 stents are implanted in patients at Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) and Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC).
