Punjab govt to introduce Smart Cards to replace Vehicle Registration Books
Punjab government is to fulfill its old commitment and is all set to introduce smart cards in place of vehicle registration books. CM Punjab, Shahbaz Shareef introduced the project in March 2015 but the project delayed up till now.
However, The Excise Taxation and Narcotics Control Department is to initiate the system from November of the following year. The system will aid the users to get rid of keeping the registration book all the time with them.
The smart card will have a Near Field Communication (NFC) chip. The chip will contain all the details regarding the owner and vehicle and the expiry date of MV tax.
According to reports, The Excise Taxation and Narcotics Control Department is to produce database for 700,000 vehicles. Department has also planned two months trial before the launch of smart card.
Every year 2 million books will be published for this purpose. Out of 2 million books, 1.6 million will be issued to the newly registered vehicles. Smart card will be valid for five years.
