HEC notification to ensure the new qualification criteria for lecturers in all Universities

HEC has given a deadline to all the universities to implement the new qualification standards for the lecturers, which needs to be 18 years of education by the end of this month.

The notification was re-circulated in March by HEC to all universities to ensure the implementation of new criteria as soon as possible for the appointment of assistant professors or lecturers. Under this new criterion, the minimum qualification for appointment of Lecturer post will be MS, MPhil, degree for18 years, or master’s degree from a renowned university.

HEC has started issuing letters to all the rectors and VC asking ensuring that minimum qualification for an appointment for lecturer will be MS/MPhil or equivalent degree of 18 years.

In 2012, HEC decided to raise the qualification of assistant professors and lecturers. The deadline for appointing the lecturers under new criteria was Jan 1, 2015. While appointment for assistant professors was Jan 1, 2016.

HEC extended the cutoff date for to raise the minimum qualification for the assistant professors in degree awarding institutions and universities to Ph.D. from January 1, 2018.

The universities adopted and then implemented the decision as well as the decision was appreciated and advised to start implementing the decision. HEC did not mention that action will be taken against the institutions who are not functioning with 16 years of graduates as lecturers or assistant professors as HEC`s ordinance of 2002 is silent on any related issue or punishment.
