Percentage of smoking girls increases to 16.3%
The point to ponder is the increasing number of female smokers in Pakistan, which has increased to 16.3% from 6% in these last years.
Tabacco is the main reason for people deaths, which increased, to 80,000 annually in Pakistan. The leading cause of lung cancer, as well as heart diseases, is smoking. While it has given birth t many other associated problems in the society.
The statistics were disclosed by the head department of Community Medicine UMDC Professor Dr. Zahid Masood on NO TOBACCO DAY at the University of Faisalabad.
Dr. Zahid Masood mentioned that according to State Bank, the report depicts that Pakistani spend Rs 250 billion on 64billion cigarettes in the year 2014 which is likely to increase in the recent years. The rate of young female smokers is alarming, and the shisha smoking percentage is 19.7%.
Smoking shisha for more than an hour is equivalent to 100 cigarettes, which means it is stronger and leaves an adverse effect on the body of a human. In Pakistan, a cigarette pack is cheaper than a loaf of bread, which is the main reason among youth to buy it because of affordability and availability.
DR Rafshan Sadiq, Head of Oncology at PINUM Faisalabad said that lung cancer is the leading reason in males and leaves a strong correlation with smoking. The harmful effects of smoking during the pregnancy is adverse.
Chief Guest also delivers a speech on the adverse effects of smoking on the individuals and their families. He appreciated the efforts of Government of Punjab and addressed the menace of Shisha smoking.
